History of Corrugated Cardboard Boxes

In 1856, the English brothers Edward Healy and Edward Allen invented corrugated paper, pressing it into a loop for use as a lining for hats to allow for breathability and absorbent properties. In 1871, American Albert Jones invented single-faced corrugated cardboard for packaging glass lampshades and similar fragile items, obtaining the first US patent. By the late 19th century, the United States began researching the use of corrugated cardboard to make shipping boxes.

In 1920, double-walled corrugated cardboard was introduced, and its applications expanded rapidly. During World War I, corrugated cardboard boxes accounted for only 20% of transport packaging. However, during World War II, they accounted for 80%. Corrugated cardboard boxes are now the most widely used packaging containers in modern commerce and trade, and one of the most important packaging forms adopted by countries worldwide. As of the end of September 2022, the proportion of my country's postal and express delivery industry in purchasing and using standard packaging materials and standardizing packaging operations both reached 90%. A total of 9.78 million recyclable express boxes were deployed, 122,000 recycling devices were installed at postal and express delivery outlets, and 640 million corrugated cardboard boxes were recycled and reused. The green governance of express packaging has achieved initial results.
